Abstract
This paper will focus on the translation of three essays written by Ye Shengtao 葉聖陶(1894-1988), a well-known Chinese educator, writer, and contributor to the reform of Modern Chinese in Mainland China, from his collection Collected Essays of Ye Shengtao, Volume II. The essays – “How Literary Writers View the Standardization of Modern Chinese,” “On Grammar and Rhetoric,” and “On Using Language” – all expand on ideas concerning language structure, grammar, rhetoric, and its standardization. These essays were written in 1950s Communist China, a period of impactful educational and linguistic reforms to invoke national unity. This thesis will provide a translation of these essays and a detailed analysis of their linguistic, political, and cultural contexts. Each translation, along with annotations and commentaries, will provide further insights into Ye Shengtao’s perspective on contemporary language studies, offer a detailed analysis of the challenges faced when translating linguistic- related texts from a different era, and show its relevance to research on the subject.
