Abstract
This study is conducted via analysis and comparison of the relevant public landmarks located in Nanjing and Taipei from the 1920s to the 1980s. The main objective of this study is to explore the image of ‘modern China’ in the minds of the official and intellectuals (mainly architects) during that period of time in history, as well as the value and significance it holds nowadays. It is critical to review the response of the people to the modern impact brought about by the West, and to observe the historical and cultural and social context during this period of time. This is done by analyzing and comparing the five architectural cases gathered from two historical phases, which are the construction of Nanjing as the‘New capital’from the 1920s to the 1940s and the development of Taipei as the ‘post-colonial city’ from the 1950s to the 1980s. As a result the linkage between various regions can be reorganized and studied. Furthermore, this study aims to discuss several issues regarding the situation and status of these architectural works, by looking into the connotation of the modernity from the perspective of culture heritage. Ultimately, it is conducted in the hope of serving a greater purpose in our present day era. Some examples of the issues discussed in detail are summarized as followed: 1. How did the people, especially the architects and politicians at that point in the history imagine and reconstruct the image of ‘modern China ‘in their minds. 2. What kind of roles did these architectural works play in it? 3. How did these national symbols integrate with the political governance and the national imagination? 4. What is special about similarities and differences between these two regions (Nanjing and Taipei)? 5. How should we view these architectural works as people from the present day era? 6. How should these architectural works be developed in order to better reflect their significance back in their days and in the present? Moreover, how will this development grant us the knowledge to improve our cultural awareness of the rich history?
