Abstract
The purpose of this study was focused on backpackers’ meaning in life and how it affected their lives. This study was conducted by a qualitative approach - phenomenological method. We conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 7 backpackers who aged from 26 to 34 using purposive sampling. After each interview, the researcher converted notes into meaning units, classified them into themes, and then integrated all the themes into the situated structure of a backpacker. Lastly, the researcher analyzed the common theme among participants. The results showed that backpackers explored the possibilities of life through self-awareness during their travel. They seized the chances to try new things, and they were willing to take responsibility for their decisions, as well as the risk, even though they acknowledged they would encounter emotions like fear, alienation, meaninglessness, isolation and inevitable death, which reminded backpackers to enrich their lives in limited time. Interactions with other backpackers enhanced the connection between themselves and the world. They learned to live in the moment, which was the way to true happiness. The search for the meaning in life influenced the backpackers' lives. They discovered their strengths and overcame personal challenges with an attitude of positivity. Finally, limitations, suggestions, and practical implications for further study were discussed.
