Abstract
This paper examines how news transeditors in Taiwan process their work and how translator schools approach news translation. While most papers and guidebooks have suggested different methods of trans-editing news from Chinese to English or from English to Chinese, this paper poses the question that whether working as a news translator requires a different skillset than what we currently have? Besides paraphrasing, or changing sentence structures, should news translators be equipped with the ability to conduct research, interviews, or to report from his/her own point of view? The first chapter of this paper researches on the current context that news trans-editors in Taiwan work and how the English media usually identify their news as being either “translated” and “cited” or “reported first-handed”. The second chapter then goes through numerous examples of trans-edited news and attempts to identify the differences and evolution between the original reports and the trans-edited ones.As Chinese news from the Chinese-speaking world – predominantly Asia – gains visibility and even, gets more and more important in the geo-political or poli-economic contexts, this paper ultimately discusses how trans-editors in Taiwan could improve their work, find different drives, and enhance their role in the media.
