Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increased awareness and consciousness among Taiwanese people regarding leisure sports, with a growing pursuit of outdoor recreational activities in nature. However, it is necessary to examine whether the accessibility features of related natural recreational facilities meet the actual needs, particularly for individuals with mobility limitations, who often face barriers such as transportation difficulties or a lack of accessible facilities. Groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and individuals with disabilities may have lower mobility compared to the general population. To enable a wider range of people to access nature without barriers, it is crucial to consider universal design principles and provide participatory accessibility experiences, such as accessible nature trails. These initiatives aim to offer accessible spaces and trail platforms, allowing everyone to easily and joyfully experience the outdoor forest environment and enjoy its pleasures. This study aims to explore the evaluation of accessible nature trail facilities on the outdoor natural environmental experiences for visitors with mobility limitations. It involves collecting domestic and international case studies and regulations related to accessible nature trail facilities, analyzing their impact on individuals with mobility limitations and relevant considerations. Using checklists based on universal design criteria for nature trail facilities from Europe, the United States, and Taiwan, as well as conducting on-site inspections, the investigation assesses the accessible nature trail facilities, spatial circulation, environmental interpretation signage, and wayfinding systems within Yangmingshan National Park. Interviews are conducted to analyze how these facilities indeed enhance users' natural experiential connection with the environment, while also understanding the current issues with the accessible nature trail environment and the experiences of facility users. The research findings indicate that parking space planning and trail safety are among the priority areas to address, followed by accessible trail signage and environmental interpretation signage. Users suggest that there should be better space utilization planning for rest areas between trails, and the slope, width, and surface materials of the trails need to provide comprehensive safety protection. The study aims to enhance the recreational environment and design development of accessible mountain trails, with the hope of allowing more people to enjoy the beauty of nature and creating a friendly environment for social integration.
