Abstract
This is a research on Niu Sien Chong which mainly focus on his role as a translator. Mr. Niu was one of the founders of Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies, Tamkang University, and the Tamkang School of Strategic Studies. The books and articles he translated or authored were mostly of international affairs and strategic studies, which have profound influence on the national defense thinking of Taiwan’s military professionals. However, he is mostly remembered as a strategic thinker and scholar rather than a translator, which leads to the neglection of his achievement as a translator. Therefore, this research, based on the theory of literary manipulation and rewriting of André Lefevere, will focus on his role as a translator. By digging into the vast sea of documents, this research attempts to reconstruct Mr. Niu’s image as a translator by studying his political ideology, translation activities, attitude in the process of translating, and his social network. In addition, this research believes that Niu’s translation career can be divided into two periods, according to the patrons of his translation works; and through statistics of the number of books he translated, and by categorizing his works, this research shows a map of Niu’s knowledge production. Finally, the relation between Niu’s role as a translator and his political ideology is generalized in the last chapter of the research.
