Abstract
The previous literature on fansubbing has focused mainly on Chinese fansub groups or the qualities of their fansubs, leaving Taiwan’s online fansubbing practices untouched. This master’s thesis aims to find the characteristics of Dadas translation community, which exhibits a significant presence among Taiwan’s online fansub communities of English programs and videos. The thesis also attempts to describe the features demonstrated by Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture reflected through the attributes of Dadas translation community. The thesis sorts out characteristics of Dadas translation community by comparing its traits with general traits of Chinese fansub groups as well as analyzing the differences. Dadas is similar to Chinese fansub groups in terms of community scale. However, Dadas and Chinese fansub groups have different characteristics in many aspects such as community operations and fansub formats, owing to their distinctive Internet environments. The varying characteristics of the two kinds of fansub communities reveal the fact that Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture is different from that of China. The thesis begins with investigating Dadas’ characteristics in terms of three aspects—the development background, community operations, and audiovisual texts. Then the thesis also attempts to depict attributes of Taiwan’s online fansubbing culture from the analysis, the related literature as well as the first-hand interviews the writer collects.
