Abstract
Besides traditional classroom teaching using blackboards and paper materials, teachers nowadays also require the assistance of electronic media and digital technology to enhance their teaching methods. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2019 has further highlighted the importance of integrating digital tools in education. Especially with the implementation of the'stop classes but keep learning' policy by the Ministry of Education, teachers have to adapt to online synchronous teaching, which requires them to learn how to utilize digital media for instruction and tackle various challenges during class. This study focuses on a junior high school in Chiayi County as the research subject. The research objective is to understand the impact of online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic on students' learning motivation and learning effect in the field of mathematics. We hope that the research findings will contribute to future teachers in resolving similar issues encountered in online teaching, facilitating smooth instruction. This study adopted two methods, questionnaire surveys and teaching experiments, to explore the impact of online teaching on students' mathematics learning, based on student feedback and the comparison of learning effect. The research findings can be summarized as follows: Although online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic has a positive impact on students' learning effect, it reduces their learning motivation. This might be associated with limitations in interaction and discussion in the online environment, as well as the relatively easier difficulty level of assessment questions caused by the pandemic. Online teaching serves as an effective measure in response to the pandemic, but it also presents challenges in terms of learning motivation and effect. We hope to enhance the instructional quality of online teaching and provide students with an improved learning experience.
