Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the discussion of the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival (TIQFF) and the queer films in Taiwan’s online media. In particular, the study intends to scrutinize the various facets of content to find out the different ways of presentation of the articals toward TIQFF and queer films in online media. In terms of research design, to study the online text database of the TIQFF’s official websites and the three forums in Taiwan – Womany, GagaTai and LalaTai – as the main sources for data-gathering. Text contents regarding TIQFF and queer films within the six-year time span (2014-2019) were collected, and a sample of 209 text segments was randomly selected for conducting content analysis. The content analysis and the thematic analysis have several significant findings. First of all, the study found that the content of TIQFF and queer movies has appeared on the Internet since 2015, and the content was mainly more than 1,000 words. Secondly, the results indicated that the articles mainly focused on gay movies. Furthermore, the main themes of the media when discussing queer movies were theme, discussion, movie directors, premier, movie actors, movie genres and awards. Lastly, when the media discussed about the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival, they focused on the promotion of the film festival, concept and endorsement, and through the sharing of their own experiences by spokespersons, directors, etc., to echo the concept of the film festival, so that the audience can understand them after participating in the process or reading. Ideas conversely trigger their own speculations, and then discussions with others, forming a cultural public sphere.
