Abstract

As a teacher for several years, I found that teenagers often indulge in the Internet and electronic devices in their free time. They seldom have opportunities to be in the nature. As a result, they are deeply disconnected with the nature. Furthermore, they don’t even want to be around nature, which cause some problems in their mental and physical developments. To achieve my goal, I use two methods: purposive sampling and snowball sampling to interview six scouting teachers with bountiful outdoor activity experiences. From the interviews, I can understand the purposes of outdoor activities for scouting classes, what affects scouting teachers to do outdoor activities, the methods to start an outdoor activity, and how to combine scouting education with environmental education. The results are as follows: I. The purpose for a scouting teacher to do outdoor activities is: to train the kids to be practical in their daily lives, and to build up connections with the environment. II. The methods to start an outdoor activity are: using patrol system, building up the tacit between the teacher and the students, constructing stable human resources, and setting up activities with missions. III. What affects scouting teachers to do outdoor activities are: safety issues, the weather condition, the support from school, the mental stress, and the faith of the teacher. IV. Through the design and lead of scouting teacher in outdoor activities and through valuing experience and reflection can help promoting environmental education. Hopefully, more middle school teachers are willing to take the children outdoors, so that learning does not occur only inside classrooms. Consequently, children may gain wider vision, and their learning would be closer to the real world.
