Abstract

The relationship between Taiwan and India has faced political challenges and ups and downs since its early days. The"Look East Asia Policy" initiated by the Indian government in early 1991 brought the two sides closer, and visa restrictions have been eased between Taiwan and India since then. The two sides established offices in each other’s capitals in 1995 to promote interaction between India and Taiwan and to strengthen exchanges in business, tourism, culture, science, and technology. Around 1980, many Indians came to Taiwan with great ambition and anxiety tin search of better living environment, jobopportunities and learning environment. Given the significant differences in the cultural ethos and practices of the two nations (language, diet, religious beliefs, etc.), the author faced many problems in the process of adjusting with life in Taiwan. These issues caught the author’s attention and he decided to study issues such as how Indians as an ethnic group adjust to life in Taiwan, how Indians from different parts of India unite and preserve their cultural traditions, and how cohesion among various ethnic groups from India can be further promoted. The author selected three different types of Indians who have migrated to Taiwan: Cases of staying in Taiwan for the purpose of studying, staying in Taiwan for work, and staying in Taiwan for marriage and conducted semi-structured open interviews. The research concluded that the Indians in Taiwan tried to accommodate various aspects of Taiwanese life (diet, work pattern, language, and culture) in their lives. Also, they organized some associations, clubs based on the cultural diversities of various regions of India, formed cricket team to preserve the mother country’s culture's heritage, to bring them closer to each other and to overcome loneliness. At the same time, these initiatives by the Indian community also allow an opportunity to the next generation of these immigrant Indians and the Taiwanese people an avenue to understand the particularity of Indian culture.
