Abstract
The study explores the educational significance of school excursion in Japanese colonial period through the records from a Chiayi Institute of Agriculture (KANO) student Sai Sekihi. Sai Sekihi studied in KANO from April 1934 to March 1939. In May 1937, the fourth grade of Mr. Sai's study, he participated a one-month-school-excursion to Manchu, Chohsen and mainland Japan. Excursion photos and the stamps of attractions or institutions taken by Sai were applied as the main materials of this study. On the other hand, Japanese textbooks of primary school, "shu-shin", and the content of national history textbooks were applied to verify the connection between the Japanese colonial education and the excursion. These exemplifications show that the trip was not only for travel purpose, but also for the educational significance. In addition to the above-mentioned overseas excursion, this study conducted Sai's other excursions. For instance, during Sai's second grade (1935) in KANO, he visited the 40th Taiwan Expo in Taipei with teachers and other students. Moreover, Sai went to the "One Week Island Excursion" held by the school from April 20 1936. After Sai graduated from KANO, on October 8, 1941, he was sent to mainland Japan for agriculture inspection by the Shin-shi town hall. Additionally, the study will also present the students' life of Chiayi Institute of Agriculture through Sai's certificates, such as the Kendo level and the "winter training of Kendo"; awards including perfect attendance; study notes and drawings; and yearbook, etc.
