Abstract
Although the practice-oriented conference interpreter training seeks to bring the real world into the classroom, actual interpreting situations cannot be fully simulated. This is where practicum comes in. Interpreting schools implement different practicum programs to enable students to acquire hands-on experience, reflect and adjust their approach to interpreting, thereby preparing themselves for the job market. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of conference interpreting practicum programs at graduate level. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight working professionals who trained as conference interpreters at GITI, NTNU between 2013 and 2019. Based on their retrospective views, this article analyzed the link between practicum and work readiness. Research results show that conference interpreting practicum implemented by GITI, NTNU fulfills its functions in helping students explore their career interests, combine theory and practice, develop professional skills and attitudes, and prepare to enter the workforce. Overall, the research participants expressed satisfaction with both the quality and quantity of the practicum activities, especially with regard to the high level of authenticity in the mock conferences. However, in terms of live interpreting, the practicum could perhaps benefit from a well-balanced mix of both modes of interpreting, i.e., consecutive and simultaneous, and a more organized implementation of dumb booth practice. In addition, participants suggested that future practicum programs include remote interpreting opportunities in response to the rise of teleconferences caused by COVID-19.
