Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to explore the feasibility of tutoring classes implementing gratitude education in response to the trend of the declining birthrate and facing the newly established tutoring classes intense competition. Exploring whether gratitude education could be a solution for tutoring classes that not only match the 108 class outline of the Ministry of Education but meets the needs of junior high school students and their parents. There are two groups in this study: (1) Experimental group: Students in seventh, eighth, ninth grade from the cram school after 1-year gratitude education. (2) Control group: Students in seventh, eighth, ninth grade from two junior high school in New Taipei City. There are three research tools in this study: (1) Qualitative analysis: Using one-on-one interview verbatim to in-depth analysis 8 students (2 seventh grade, 3 eighth grade, 3 ninth grade) in the experimental group about their changes in the experience and feelings of receiving gratitude education. (2) Quantitative analysis: Adolescent gratitude scale designed by Chen Xinyi (2008): To understand the difference of control group (Students in seventh, eighth and ninth grades of two middle schools in New Taipei City) and experimental group (Students in seventh, eighth and ninth grades in the cram school which receive the gratitude education course of this research for one year) in gratitude, attitude to life, and reading habits. (3) Parental satisfaction questionnaire: The researcher designed questionnaire to understand the satisfaction status of the experimental group students’ parents as auxiliary reference material. 1. Quantitative questionnaire conclusion: (1) The average grade of gratitude traits of the students in the experimental group is higher than the control group. The statistical verification has showed the grade is different between two groups. (2) The average score of the school segment examination is positively correlated with the gratitude traits. (3) Conclusion of the survey on parental satisfaction is positive in the experimental group. 2. Qualitative interview conclusion: The 8 students who participated in the qualitative interview were helpful to the recognition and improvement of gratitude and improve their learing attitude after the gratitude education was implemented in the cram school. To sum up, it is feasible to implement gratitude education in cram schools, and it can become a strategy for managing and transformation.
