Abstract
This study aims to investigate whether humorous comics are suitable for integration into aviation Mandarin learning materials, targeting international aviation cabin crew members whose native language is not Mandarin. The researcher utilizes the humorously witty American aviation comic"Jetlagged Comic" as the theme, portraying the daily flight life of cabin crew members in a simple, humorous, witty, and realistic manner, and it has been well-received by cabin crew members from various countries. The paper first employs a literature review method to explore three main themes: humor, comics, and aviation Mandarin research. Referencing the literature, the researcher compiles the "Jetlagged Comic Aviation Mandarin Learning Material," translating the comic content from English toMandarin. Traditional Chinese characters, Hanyu Pinyin, and English translations are used in the material's layout, and the content is analyzed and graded using the "TOCFL Mandarin Vocabulary Guide" word segmentation system. Finally, a questionnaire survey method is employed, inviting five teachers with extensive experience in Mandarin teaching to evaluate the teaching material. The results indicate that the "Jetlagged Comic Aviation Mandarin Learning Material" is an excellent teaching resource, confirming that incorporating humorous comics into aviation Mandarin teaching materials is not only amusing but also sparks learners' interest, signifying its developmental potential. However, feedback from the evaluation suggests paying attention to: (1) Carefully considering humorous and satirical elements in the comic selection, (2) Ensuring the alignment of professional knowledge and vocabulary with learning needs, and (3) Addressing the wide range of vocabulary levels. Additionally, it is noted that, as a research limitation, there has been no implementation of this teaching material with students, and future research is encouraged to use this material in classroom instruction.
