Abstract
During simultaneous interpretation, the time lag between hearing the source text and delivering the target text is known as the Ear-Voice Span (EVS), which plays a crucial role in strategy use and time management in SI. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the time lag (EVS) and Mandarin-to-English simultaneous interpreting performance. To reach this aim, fifteen Mandarin A (English B) interpreters, who either were professional conference interpreters or students who had completed two semesters of SI to English training, were invited and asked to interpret a Mandarin speech into English, producing fifteen recordings which were transcribed to measure EVS, to analyze the relationship between EVS and error types, and that between EVS and delivery scores. Error type classification by Barik (1973) was utilized as well as delivery rating criteria by Liu (2007). Findings of this study suggest that only two out of thirteen error types are correlated to EVS: delayed omission and gross phrasing change both have statistically higher occurrences when EVS is longer. Also, findings suggest that there is no correlation between EVS and delivery grades.
