Abstract

This study examines the political landscape during the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty through the lens of Gao Jiong and Yang Su, with a particular focus on the crown prince replacement incident in the late Kaihuang period as a critical juncture. By analyzing their political decisions and actions across different phases, this paper compares their respective successes and failures in the struggle for power. Adopting a chronological framework, it traces the evolution of Gao Jiong and Yang Su's political careers, revealing their underlying implications for the early Sui political climate and the dynasty's trajectory. From the late Northern Zhou to the early Sui period, the political roles of Gao Jiong and Yang Su began to diverge. Gao Jiong emerged as a key official in Emperor Wen's centralization efforts, balancing various bureaucratic factions, while Yang Su, despite his prestigious Guanlong Group background, faced career limitations until his military achievements in the conquestof Chen propelled him into the power core. Their contrasting paths to prominence reflect the dynamic interplay between imperial authority and bureaucratic forces in the early Sui political order.Following the unification of the north and south, the Sui court underwent another round of political realignment. In this shifting landscape, Gao Jiong adhered rigidly to the principle of primogeniture and institutional stability, a conservative stance that ultimately led to his downfall. In contrast, Yang Su aligned himself with Yang Guang, demonstrating political flexibility—though this alliance also sowed the seeds of future peril. Their divergent choices highlight the tension between institutional ideals and pragmatic statecraft. The crown prince replacement incident not only shaped the course of the Sui Dynasty but was also reinterpreted in Tang historical records to serve political agendas. Gao Jiong was idealized as a model of loyal ministers, while Yang Su was vilified as a scheming opportunist—a narrative constructed to legitimize Tang imperial rule. To move beyond this Tang-framed historiography, this study re-examines both figures within the context of Sui politics. The political decisions of Gao Jiong and Yang Su were not merely pivotal to the rise and fall of the Sui Dynasty; they also provide a critical reference point for understanding the political history of the Sui-Tang transition.
