跨文化字幕翻譯策略—以布袋戲《霹靂英雄戰紀之刀說異數》第一集為例

Abstract
本次研究探討《霹靂英雄戰紀之刀說異數》第1集由NETFLIX網路付費收視平台授權,是首部可切換中、英兩種不同語言字幕觀看的線上付費收視的布袋戲影集。隨著影片可觸及的觀眾因網路傳遞到世界各地觀眾,彼此間不同的社會及生活背景下造成的跨文化差異也隨之越來越大,為了解跨文化差異因素下的字幕翻譯策略,本研究採用跨文化交流之影視翻譯策略所歸納的六大翻譯策略(順譯、逆譯、音譯、意譯、增譯、及略譯)來分析字幕所使用的策略,並以德國功能理論學派的觀點,來探討其現象與意義。
另外為實際了解上述翻譯策略是否達到德國功能學派學者奈達所提出的目的對等效果,本次研究也透過對英語母語人士實際訪談方式加以探討,並發現即使受訪者們都是英語人士,但隨著身處的背景文化不同,其社會、宗教、語言及物質等文化都會有別於彼此,進而對語料劇中的劇情對話等理解上也會有所分歧而影響到整體收視品質。由於本研究所採用的語料《霹靂英雄戰紀之刀說異數》第1集作為以布袋戲為題材的影視作品本身就是一個文化性很強的影視題材,從社會、宗教、語言以至到物質文化無所不含括在內,這樣深具傳統文化特色的影視題材加上外國觀眾文化差異的影響更加深跨文化交流上的溝通難度。
Puppet shows have long been extremely popular among the Taiwanese viewing public. Until recently, however, these shows were unavailable to the wider world, for no one had taken the trouble to translate them into English. The situation changed dramatically in 2019, when NETFLIX released an entire season of the puppet show Pili Fantasy: War of Dragons. This thesis examines the English subtitle translation of the first episode of Pili Fantasy: War of Dragons. When it comes to subtitle translations, scholars have proposed six major strategies—sequential translation, reverse translation, transliteration, literal translation, amplification, and reduction. This study examines how these six strategies are employed in the translation under consideration. In addition, in an attempt to find out how successful the translation has been, the author conducted interviews with several foreigners, all of them fluent in English. The results of these interviews suggest that the religious and cultural backgrounds of the audience can have an effect on viewing quality. It is hoped that the present thesis can help the reader better understand some of the many difficulties involved in cross-cultural communication.
