Abstract
This dissertation studied Taiwan images through the local Mandarin and Taiwanese popular music of post-war Taiwan. Popular music, as a part of popular culture, reveals the public’s thinkings and feelings. The composition and distribution of popular music reflected and also built Taiwan images. Comparing to the press and literature works, popular music is more powerful in expressing emotions and thus has more influences. In post-war Taiwan, through the imposition of martial law, withdrawal from the United Nations, broken off with the U.S., the lift of martial law and party alternation, composers in every period shaped different Taiwan images by depicting the reality of society and the ideal of the country. In post-war Taiwan, the Mainlanders and the Taiwanese represented different orientations of popular music. The Nationalist government restrained dialects and guided the popular music market by Mandarine songs. In other hand, Taiwanese popular music, confronting Taiwan as a base to recover the Mainland China, put Taiwan Island as the subject in popular songs. In order to sort out the Taiwan images in popular music, this dissertation collected songs, lyrics and relevant studies to analyze “Taiwan” as the subject in the titles and lyrics and to research the backgrounds and purposes of the formation of the Taiwan images.
