從宗教寓言到通俗動作片:談《駭客任務》字幕翻譯

Abstract

精簡化及深入淺出,一直以來便是商業電影字幕翻譯的首要考量。然而,以《駭客任務三部曲》這樣的科幻動作片為例,商業考量與原作的原汁原味是否得以並行不悖?畢竟,既然是商業電影,原作應該便已經是「商業化」的產品,不會有太極端或艱澀難懂的內容。而如果《駭》片的片商或製作人有勇氣及信心在商業電影中大談因果、業、輪迴、預言,等佛學、神學、新時代的用語,則是否中文的片商及譯者可以有勇氣及信心比照辦理?本研究主旨便在探討商業考量與原汁原味並行的可能性,並透過對《駭》片的分析,提出翻譯選擇可用的觀點與策略。
For most commercial films, simplification is usually the requirement to be met by subtitle translators. However, for science fiction films such as The Matrix Trilogy, can a balance be maintained between commercial concerns and that of the screenwriters in the translating process? After all, being a “commercial film” itself, the film and its screenplay should have been “commercialized” enough to avoid over complexity and extremities. If the movie producers have the courage and the confidence in producing and promoting a film which speaks a lot about Buddhism, Theology, New Age, from which terms such as causality, karma, reincarnation, prophesy, and the like come from, perhaps the movie promoters and translators who speak the target language can do the same? This research aims to explore this possibility by investigating the Matrix Trilogy, its subtitle translation, and its root, Buddhism.
