Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the acute effects of capsaicin ingestion on half-squat performance, muscle oxygenation index, and heart rate variability. Methods: 12 resistance-trained men were recruited to complete a control trial (CON), and then required to perform 2 treatments in a randomized crossover design, including consuming capsicum extract capsules containing 12 mg of capsaicin (CAP) or dietary fiber capsules (PLA), 45 minutes before half-squat exercise. Participants performed 4 sets of half-squats with 70% of 1RM until concentric failure after each treatment. During the squats, training volume and the rate of perceived of exertion (RPE) were measured. Kinetic parameters were collected by force platform and linear displacement transducer. Changes in muscle oxygenation were monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy. Heart rate variability (HRV) during the rest after supplementation were monitored by heart rate sensor. Results: No significant differences were observed in training volume among the three treatments (p> .05). However, CAP tended to maintain the training volume between the third and fourth sets (1596.3 ± 541.2 kg vs. 1460.0 ± 419.9 kg, p > .05), but the significant decreases were found in CON (1738.5 ± 474.6 kg vs. 1400.6 ± 434.1 kg, p < .05) and PLA (1639.6 ± 464.6 kg vs. 1490.4 ± 449.1 kg, p < .05). In addition, no significant differences in kinetic parameters (force, velocity and power) between the first and second sets (p > .05) in CAP, while the significant decreases were found in CON andPLA (p < .05). However, no significant differences were observed in RPE, muscle oxygenation, or pre-exercise HRV among the treatments. Conclusion: In resistance-trained men, CAP supplementation did not significantly improve perceived exertion, muscle oxygenation, or training volume during half-squat exercise. However, CAP may attenuate fatigue during multi-set resistance training.
