Abstract
This thesis aims at presenting the problems encountered and the strategies adopted during my translation of Rabindraneth Tagore’s Stray Birds. . Stray Birds was translated by Tagore himself from Bengali to English. Since the first Chinese translation of Stray Birds, the book remains popular in Taiwan’s publishing market and was translated and published many times. The main characteristic of Tagore’s Stray Birds is that, with English not his native tongue, he used his own English to present his thought in the poems. This thesis is mainly divided into two parts. The first part is the commentary on the translation and the second part is a corresponding list of my first draft and the published translation. There are five chapters in the first part. Chapter one is an introduction. Chapter two deals with Tagore’s poetic background and his writing style. Chapter three describes the problems encountered and strategies adopted in the translation process. Chapter four is a comparison of my first draft and the published translation. The last chapter is a brief conclusion of the issues mentioned in the previous chapters.
