zh_TW
The booming development of the Internet and media has contributed to a rapid change in how popular culture is expressed and spread, breaking the boundaries of time and space through technologies such as social media and streaming service. Compared with movies or scripted series, reality television features relatively low production costs and takes shorter time to produce, which meets the pursuit of speed and cheapness in the streaming era, and with its focus on the participation of ordinary people and unscripted talks and actions, it’s also a hit with viewers. This thesis, taking British-American reality show Too Hot to Handle as a case study, aims to explore the translation strategies of reality television in Chinese subtitles. Based on American translator Eugene Nida’s translation theory of functional equivalence, the thesis applies Michael Halliday's model of register to analyze the source text, focusing on the taboo words and cultural specific terms that often appear in reality television programs. From the perspectives of field, mode, tenor, and dialect, the thesis examined the Chinese subtitles and discussed the ideal translation strategies for subtitling reality television. The results show that reality television, as an important part of popular culture, is by and large for the purpose of entertainment, which is mainly achieved through personal identity construction of the participants, the presence of informal, idiomatic or even offensive expressions in language, and the reflection of real-life situations. Based on the observation, the thesis suggests the subtitle translation of reality programs be colloquial and express the emotions as well as the speaking style of the participants as accurately as possible. Meanwhile, through the application of register analysis, the translator can more effectively facilitate the communication and achieve an equivalence of response and effect in the target subtitle-reading audience.en_US
