Abstract

This thesis aims at discussing translations of book reviews by Virginia Woolf. With introduction and translation of this complete collection of her book reviews, Contemporary Writers, I hope I can open another door for readers in Taiwan to appreciate Woolf’s talent in writing reviews in addition to novels and prose. Besides, I employ the basic requirements of the theory “Representation of Aesthetics in Translation” proposed by Professor Michael Liu to examine my own translation to see whether the translation has faithfully conveyed the beauty of the original lines. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one, Introduction, includes a general statement of the motivations and the purpose of this thesis, a brief introduction to the original text of Contemporary Writers and its author, and a general collection of Woolf-related works and translation in Taiwan. Chapter two, in accordance with the theme of this thesis, focuses on the introduction of the review as a genre and its history of development, followed by the description of Woolf’s critic attitude and literary style of reviews. Chapter three is Methodology and Model Analysis, in which I adopt Michael Liu’s four basic requirements from the theory of “Representation of Aesthetics in Translation” to evaluate the translations of two translated books of essays and reviews by Woolf, Novels and Novelists and The Common Reader to see if their translations has tallied with the four requirements. Chapter Four extends the evaluation of Chapter three. This Chapter focuses on evaluating and commenting on my own translations with the same requirements mentioned in the previous chapter, thus finding out the common difficulties and obstacles when translating Virginia Woolf’s works. Chapter Five is the conclusion. In this chapter, I make a general evaluation on translations discussed in the thesis to know if they have met with the standard I set for translating book reviews. Then I shift the focus on the development of book reviews in Taiwan, to see if it is possible for Taiwan to enhance its attention to book reviews with more and more translations of reviews coming out.
