This article describes the nature of teaching and tools of an internet-based distance education program, LEEP3, which has offered by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign since 1996. Each LEEP3 course has four components: a syllabus, an archive, a bulletin board and the live session. Tools used for instruction can be categorized as asynchronous and synchronous. In live sessions, students and teacher are teaching and learning synchronously in a virtual classroom at same time in different places. Synchronous tools include audio transmission, text-chat and slides/web site navigation. Asynchronous tools include electronic mail, web boards and web pages. The implications of online education for future education of library and information science are also discussed.
