Abstract
Many French navy officers left memoirs and critiques regarding the Sino-French War (1884-85). One of them was André Salles (1860-1929), an administrative officer of the French cruiser L’Éclaireur. Salles showed great enthusiasm for hiking and photography. Therefore, with the combination of his interests and personal characteristics, his works presented a different perspective from other foreigners visiting Taiwan in the late 19th century.Salles’ works concerning the period he stayed in Formosa and the Pescadores Islands included about 45 photographic plates and the article he published on Annuaire of Club Alpin Français in 1885. His photographs record not only the coastline of northern Taiwan, the military tasks of the French soldiers during the wartime, but represent the material culture and life of local residents, especially their interaction with French officers. This thesis shows Salles’ experiences and thoughts behind thecamera scenes by analyzing the content of his notes on the package of the plates and his publication. On the basis of study findings, the case of Salles can illustrate the contradictions and complexities of imperialism and offer a glimpse into the history of Taiwanese society intertwined with the world in the late 19th century.
