Abstract
This study attempts to examine how the character Takasugi Shinsuke from the Japanese manga Gintama is reinterpreted and rewritten in fanfiction. Using Nord's textual analysis model and Lefevere's theory of literary patronage as theoretical frameworks, the research analyzes Chinese fan fiction from 2007-2023, supplemented by data from Archive of Our Own (AO3). The research finds that the character originally possessed five main traits: dangerous, non-mundane, artistic, emotionally restrained, and mysterious. These traits were selectively preserved and rewritten in fan fiction, with “dangerous” being the most frequently retained. After the manga revealed more of the character's past in 2015, fanfiction underwent significant changes as well. By 2019, the character image stabilized again. Data analysis shows that fanfiction with the highest page views often contains sexual content, while works receiving more appreciation typically feature comprehensive character development. The fandom primarily interacts through online platforms. The 2021 anime film release sparked a wave of creative works that lasted about a year before gradually declining. The study notes that fanfiction not only reproduces original traits but also reflects the fandom’s understanding and expectations. However, the research has limitations, including loss of early data due to platform changes or fan writer’s personal choices. This study provides a new perspective on how anime and manga characters are rewritten in fan works.
