zh_TW
Yang Shuang-zi’s fiction The Season When Flowers Bloom, focusing on the growth of female students during the Japanese rule period, reflects the theme of a short story with the same title written by Yang Chian-ho in 1942: females often struggled between marriage and self-pursuit after graduated from school. Yang creates a bland new historical narrative with the concept of “Yuri” and tries to offer a solution to the difficulties faced by the girls. The term “Yuri” (Lily) is said to originate from Japanese subculture. However, in the social history of Taiwan, lily is also taken as a symbol of Taiwan spirit, which possesses the power of resisting threats and invaders. The concept “Yuri/Lily” in Taiwan therefore provides a cross-cultural meaning which connects local and foreign culture. With an approach different from those of male writers who writes through the aspect of victims under colonialism, Yang Shuang-zi re-places and re-defines “Yuri/Lily” in Taiwan history, showing that “Yuri”, female relationships, may have the power of transforming under disadvantaged circumstances. This thesis takes Yang Shuang-zi’s The Man Scooping up the Moon (2016), The Season When Flowers Bloom (2017) and Blossoming Girls of Gorgeous Island (2018) as novel series, pointing out that “Yuri Girls” possess the power of historical interpretation. The Man Scooping up the Moon, focusing on a psychic girl, provides a profile of Taiwan temple culture. The Season When Flowers Bloom, portraying the friendship between Taiwanese and Japanese female students, represents life images of colonial Taiwan back in 1930s. Blossoming Girls of Gorgeous Island, a fan fiction of The Season When Flowers Bloom, is a reflection or response to those classic works of Weng Nao, Masugi Shizue, Yoshiya Nobuko. In sum, this thesis points out the power of “Yuri Girls” in impacting the existing value and its potential to enrich Taiwan historical novels. This historical writing is also an attempt to quest for a society of gender equality for the present time.en_US
