Abstract

Toshio Hosokawa (1955–) is one of the most renowned contemporary Japanese composers. He studied in Germany during his early years under the guidance of Korean composer Isang Yun (1917–1995), and his works are frequently performed around the world. Deeply influenced by nature, Buddhism, philosophy, and traditional Japanese aesthetics, Hosokawa’s music merges Eastern and Western perspectives, resulting in a unique and poetic musical language. This thesis explores Hosokawa’s biography and compositional philosophy, examining his musical style from the perspectiveof Japanese aesthetics. Focusing on Lotus Under the Moonlight (2006), the study analyzes his work from various aspects including pitches, motifs, texture and timbre. It further reflects on how his musical concepts have inspired and influenced the author’s own creative process.
