Abstract

This study aims to explore contracts used by conference interpreters in Taiwan. Quantitative and qualitative data are gathered through the use of questionnaire and interviews to analyze conference interpreters' views on the standard terms on a contract . This study further examines the professional status of conference interpreters from the perspective of contracts. The primary findings of this study are as follows: (1) The interpreters strongly agree with the inclusion of the standard terms in their contracts, such as a cancellation clause or provisions that address recording issues and working conditions. (2) The interpreters' practices are consistent with their beliefs. The more they agree or disagree with a standard term, the more likely they will include or exclude that term in their own contract.(3) Trainings from an interpreting postgraduate program and discussions among colleagues are what contribute to the high degree of consensus on the standard terms. (4) Conference interpreters in Taiwan in general have less bargaining power than their direct clients or agencies. Therefore, it is recommended that a professional association of interpreters be formed so that the association not only can provide a standard contract but can also strengthen interpreters' bargaining power as a whole.
