Abstract

This study investigates the English surtitles of The Legend of the White Snake, a Taiwanese opera by Ming Hwa Yuan, focusing on translation strategies and audience reception in a cross-cultural context. It addresses four main issues: (1) how culture-specific items (CSIs) are translated; (2) how poetic language is adapted and restructured; (3) how Mandarin, as an intermediary language, affects the translation of the original Taiwanese Hokkien lines; and (4) how native English speakers perceive and comprehend the surtitles.Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, the research involves corpus annotation and strategy classification, drawing on the models of Pedersen and Gottlieb. Xu Yuanchong’s Three Beauties Theory—semantic, phonetic, and formal beauty—is used to assess the translation of poetic language. The study also compares Taiwanese Hokkien source text, Mandarin mediation, and English subtitles to identify semantic shifts. A questionnaire with 15 native English speakers evaluates subtitle readability and cultural transmission. Results show that “paraphrasing” and “generalization” are the most common strategies for CSIs. Poetic translations favor meaning over rhythm or structure, emphasizing semantic beauty. While intermediary Mandarin occasionally causes distortion, its overall impact is limited. Audiences generally found the surtitles effective, though further refinement in language accuracy and poetic expression is needed. The study underscores the role of surtitles as both communicative tools and cultural bridges.
