Abstract

本論文探討日治時期三首以臺灣為主題的歌曲:〈臺灣周遊唱歌〉(1910年)、〈臺灣之歌〉(1919年)和〈臺灣之歌〉(1929年),分析其創作背景、歌詞內容及文化意涵,揭示其在教育與宣傳中的雙重功能。這些歌曲在不同時期,反映了日本殖民當局如何通過音樂媒介塑造殖民地臺灣的形象,並展現統治的成果。〈臺灣周遊唱歌〉是以1908年縱貫鐵路通車為契機創作,歌詞內容包含鐵道沿線的地理、特產與自然景觀,旨在傳遞臺灣作為現代化殖民地的形象,並宣揚鐵路建設所帶來的進步與便利。該歌曲不僅用於地理教育,也作為對內外宣傳殖民治理成果的工具。1919年的〈臺灣之歌〉由日本內地的殖民機構主導創作,試圖介紹臺灣地理與文化,但歌詞視角過於偏向內地,缺乏對臺灣在地特性的深入理解,因而未能在臺灣廣泛流行,顯示出殖民地文化政策的限制。1929年的〈臺灣之歌〉則由臺灣教育會徵選產生,參與者來自多元背景,歌詞內容在展現臺灣地方特色的同時,亦強調日本統治下的現代化成就與基礎建設成果。本文認為,這三首歌曲是殖民地音樂敘事的典型例子,具有教育與宣傳的雙重功能。它們不僅作為教材引導殖民地民眾認識地理與文化,更是日本向內地及國際傳播統治正當性的重要文化媒介。本研究透過對歌曲的歷史背景與歌詞分析,探討音樂在塑造殖民地形象及推動意識形態傳播中的角色。
This thesis explores three songs themed around Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period: Taiwan Tour Song (1910), Song of Taiwan (1919), and Song of Taiwan (1929). By analyzing their creation backgrounds, lyrics, and cultural significance, this study reveals their dual functions in education and propaganda. These songs reflect how the Japanese colonial authorities used music as a medium to shape the image of colonial Taiwan and to showcase their governance achievements.Taiwan Tour Song was created in 1910, inspired by the completion of the Taiwan north-south railway in 1908. The lyrics describe the geography, local products, and natural scenery along the railway, presenting Taiwan as a modernized colony and highlighting the progress and convenience brought by railway construction. This song served not only as a tool for geographic education but also as a medium to promote the achievements of Japanese colonial governance both internally and externally. The Song of Taiwan (1919), directed by Japanese colonial institutions in mainland Japan, attempted to introduce Taiwan's geography and culture. However, due to its overly mainland-centered perspective and insufficient alignment with Taiwan’s local characteristics, it failed to gain widespread circulation in Taiwan, revealing the limitations of colonial cultural policies. The Song of Taiwan (1929), selected through a competition held by the Taiwan Education Association, involved participants from diverse backgrounds. Its lyrics emphasized local features while simultaneously highlighting the modern infrastructureand achievements under Japanese rule.This study argues that these three songs exemplify colonial music narratives with dual educational and propagandistic functions. They not only served as teaching materials to help colonial subjects understand geography and culture but also as a crucial cultural medium for Japan to assert the legitimacy of its rule to both domestic and international audiences. Through the analysis of the historical context and lyrics of these songs, this research examines how music shaped the image of colonial Taiwan and facilitated the dissemination of ideological narratives.
