Abstract
After the decline of magazine comics in the late 1990s, Korean comics gradually transitioned to online formats. Starting with"Snow Cat Diary" in 1998 and "Innocent Comics" in 2003, Korean comics have evolved unique forms and marketing models over the past decade, reaching unprecedented heights in Korea. In 2014, seeking a larger market, NAVER WEBTOON began its overseas expansion under the name LINE WEBTOON, starting with Taiwan. Prior to entering the Taiwanese market, LINE WEBTOON recognized a lack of writers and works in Taiwan's local comics industry. With the goals of "discovering local writers" and "creating a local ecosystem using IP," the company has been committed to revitalizing Taiwan's comics industry and has achieved a significant level of influence and success. This article examines the rise of comic strips in South Korea, their overseas development strategies, and the effectiveness of LINE WEBTOON's initiatives in Taiwan, as seen through the working methods of LINE WEBTOON translators and the perspectives of Taiwanese writers on LINE WEBTOON.
