Abstract
There are increasing numbers of articles discussing translated texts of popular science books, and in turn public awareness concerning their translation quality has been raised. Meanwhile, the academic translation of social science& humanities has attracted a certain degree of attention; however, translation of engineering textbooks for colleges and universities have received little attention. The author has conducted an investigation for the translated texts of two typical textbooks used in mechanical engineering departments, Engineering Mechanics and Engineering Materials. It is aimed to reveal inadequacies in the translated texts, including misunderstanding original English texts and inappropriate Chinese expressions. The author hopes to find the principles in translating this particular kind of text by examining these inadequacies. These two textbooks have been widely used in university and technology college for the last twenty years, which also represent two typical types of textbooks used in engineering discipline in term of text; one is predominated with words and the other is with a substantial portion of equation and figure. The thesis will first begin with the background, motive, and framework of the thesis. Chapter 2 describes the characteristics of the translation of the engineering textbooks including their specialized professional background, translators being exclusively college teachers, and difficulty in fulfilling editors' functions. In Chapter 3, the inadequacies found in the two translated textbooks are analyzed and corrected. The inadequacies are classified as four groups: word, phrase, sentence, and grammar. Finally, in Chapter 4, suggestions are proposed to enhance the translation quality for the translation of engineering textbooks. Typical errors of this particular type of translation are summarized for translators’ reference.
