Abstract

This study aims to explore the structural mapping relationships between original texts and their translations, termed as'translation paths', by analyzing parallel corpora and the alignment patterns of terminal nodes in their tree-structured hierarchies. It seeks to validate the potential of translation path analysis in thoroughly comparing and understanding the translation strategies, techniques, and styles among different translations. To achieve this, the study selected three medium and short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, along with translations by four different translators, as the analytical corpus. Lovecraft'sworks are known for their complex sentence structures and challenges in syntax arrangement, thereby aiding in demonstrating the diversity of translation paths. The findings show that the translation path analysis method excels in revealing the interdependence between translation processes and techniques, proving its profound insights in analyzing translation strategies and styles. However, the effective practice and application of this method are also limited by the prerequisite knowledge required by the researcher.Overall, this study offers an innovative perspective in the field of translation research, particularly in the comparison of translations, and highlights the factors that need to be considered in the further application of the translation path analysis method.
