Abstract
Tamura Gumi was a construction company that operated over almost the entire Japanese colonial period. After two proprietors, the company has contracted various well-known projects. During the Tamura Sen'nosuke period, the Tamura Gumi focused on the reclamation and construction in Hualien. As for the Tamura Sakutarō period, the Tamura Gumi expanded its activity throughout the island, and its technical capabilities have also increased during this time. Among all the projects contracted by the Tamura Group, the Tainan Suehirochō Shophouse project is the most famous one. Tamura Gumi was a privately held company until 1943, when it was registered under the name of Tamura Gumi Kabushiki Gaisha. Dueto the lack of historical materials for private companies, this study uses the"Merchants’ and Industrials’ Credit Book of Shogyo Koshinsho", and the net asset records on in this book can be used to identify Taiwanese companies’ positions during the Japanese era. Through the research of the Tamura Gumi, we can understand that at the end of the civil engineering process the small and medium-sized enterprises have not only contracted many important projects, but also actively cooperated with each other. Although below a certain threshold, such enterprises have become a forceto be reckoned with. The projects contracted by Tamura Gumi can be regarded as the development process of the colonial empire in Taiwan, including railways, eastern reclamation, urban planning and south forward policy, etc. Tamura Gumi is an example of how ordinary people came to Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, which provided a trajectory of life and position apart from bureaucrats and celebrities. The research results are transformed into the creation of an illustrated book. I hope this will lead to a better understanding of the story of Tamura Gumi.
