zh_TW
This thesis is to present the English poet Ernest Christopher Dowson (1868-1900) to the Chinese readership, and to proffer a Chinese translation of his first collection of poetic works, Verses, which includes a preface, an envoy, an 44 poems. This thesis is composed of three parts. The introduction, starting with a discussion of the existent few Chinese translation of Dowson’s works, outlines Dowson’s time and the cultural characteristics of it; near the end of it, a brief review of Dowson’s language and the basic translating procedures employed in the thesis are brought forth. The second part is the complete translation of Dowson’s Verses, while the third part offers a reconstruction of Dowson’s life as the appendix. Endeavors have been made to reconstruct a biography and to annotate the work to be translated. Publications on Dowson’s works or life are comparatively few, and he often quotes Latin and French verse in his own poems. Besides, some of his poems can be further understood to an eminent degree by consulting his collection of letters. The biography and the annotation of the original, for their assistance in interpreting the verse text, were first embarked on and cost no less time or efforts than the translation itself. The focus and the challenge on translating Dowson’s poems are oftentimes the poetic musicality which Dowson did for several times emphasize or over-emphasize in his correspondence with friends. In the Chinese translation, attempts are made to represent his poetic musicality mostly by rhyming. Verse forms like villanelle, sonnet, ballad can be found with the exact rhyme scheme in their Chinese rendition. If the original rhyme scheme is not followed, the translation is made to rhyme otherwise. The goal is to draw near the distance between Dowson and his potential readers; the hope, to arouse feelings similar to that the original does.en_US
