Abstract

When Cultural Disadvantage Meets Innovation Management: A Study on the Metamorphosis of a School in a Remote Region Abstract This is the story of my alma mater, Municipal Fu-an Junior High School of Shezidao, Taipei City, and how it received a new life of its own through changes brought about by innovation managementmeasures. The story began when the school “summoned” me back to its loving embrace. It was purely through coincidence that I returned to this place where so many youthful memories were created. I was overwhelmed with nostalgia as I reminisced over those good old daystwenty-five years ago butitfelt almost like yesterday. The campus looked just the same, but the atmosphere had changed. The difference between the new and the old was what led me on a romantic trek along the path of memories, where I sought the roots of it all following the footsteps of many who had preceded me. That was when I discovered that my alma mater, standing proudlyin a desolate wilderness for nearly half a century, had transformed into a magnificent butterfly from the unattractive caterpillar it once was through the cultivation of innovationmanagement. The reason I am writing this article from a narrative point of view is that the story I aim to tell is an emotionalone, full of life, and comprising difficulties and challenges, growth and happiness, courage and endless bitter, passionate and moving moments. At the “final destination” of the journey, I am glad to discover that my old school now excels in six major features: innovative administration and management, innovative cultural modeling, innovative courses and teaching methods, innovative student activities, innovative environmental spaces, and innovative public relations. What I see is a Fu-an Junior High Schoolthat transcended countless obstacles to achieve many grand breakthroughs. The original innovation strategies were applied well, breathing new life into this disadvantaged school in a remote region. I share my thoughts and observations along this journey with operators and educators in culturally-disadvantaged schools, educational administrative organizations, and future academic researchers. Looking back on this journey of the innovation of Fu-an Junior High School, I am truly able to redefine myself, andmarvel overthe inspiration my old school aroused in me. Keywords: Innovative school management, culturally-disadvantaged schools
