《孟子》「始作俑者其無後乎」辨義

dc.description.abstract《孟子.梁惠王上》曾引用孔子「始作俑者其無後乎。」這一句話,趙岐的注解認為是因作俑而導致生人殉葬,所以孔子惡之。但是殷墟考古的發掘,至少在目前證實了人殉先於作俑。則作俑者因何而作﹖孔子所惡當否﹖就是本文討論的重點。順既有之成說而論,始作俑者或因審美而作俑偶,初不與於殉,而後人始以俑殉,此固無關乎仁或不仁;或因經濟發展,人力利用的觀點,始作俑以替人,此則從現實功利說之,徵諸史實,亦未必洽愜;或因附麗人殉,競尚奢侈而作俑,則此心誠可誅;或基於人道之不忍,又鑒於人情所習之不易決絕,故作俑以救人,此實仁心之發動,本心之呈顯。然以上之說必返諸原典之脈絡,以尋其解釋之限度,如此義理之分際方能明白切當。zh_tw
