Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate bird photographers (thereafter called birders), their different levels of serious leisure qualities, and their agreement on the Leave No Trace (LNT) principles. Paper questionnaires were given to 250 birders at popular birding sites northern Taiwan, and 225 valid questionnaires were collected. Invitations to fill in the online questionnaire were sent to active members of birding blogs and Facebook, and 161 responses returned. A total of 386 valid questionnaires were collected. All statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 19, using correlations, descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and two-step cluster. The results showed that 1. Most birders were mostly over-forty, male, retired, many from the service industry. 2. There were significant differences among birders’ levels of serious leisure by gender, age group, and occupation. 3. Birders’ agreement differed significantly on LNT by age group, marital status, and occupation. 4. There were significant positive correlations among birders’ levels of serious leisure and their agreement on Leave No Trace principles. This research urged birders of higher level of serious leisure demonstrate an ethical role model for new birders. Continuous promotion of Leave No Trace principles was also suggested. Key words: birding, serious leisure, Leave No Trace
