Abstract
Ever since tennis was introduced to Taiwan, translation has played a huge part in the development of the sport. However, the studies of tennis translation were rare and none of the previous studies were conducted to investigate the patronage of tennis translation. This research aims to analyze the mechanism of producing tennis translation and what influence translated tennis books have had upon the development of tennis in Taiwan. The historical approach was adopted within the framework of the polysystem theory and descriptive translation studies. The results show that 73 translated tennis books were published between 1971 and 2021; the majority of them emerged in the 1980s while the lowest point appeared in the 2000s. Over the past decade, publishers in Taiwan have adopted a more diverse strategy in selecting tennis books such as autobiographies/biographies, sports psychology, sports nutrition and history, yet 82 percent of these translated books belongs to the category of tennis skills and techniques. The research also reveals that publishers, having developed many sports books series and introduced tennis books from abroad, are the biggest patrons of tennis translation. In the literary system of translated sports books, baseball and basketball translation occupy primary positions whereas tennis remains peripheral. Lastly, although few translators of these books have experience in playing tennis at any levels, they have been instrumental in promoting the sport of tennis in Taiwan.
