Abstract

As Taiwan rapidly enters a super-aged society, the demand for home-based care and independent living among older adults has become increasingly urgent. In light of changes in family structure—particularly the widespread emergence of solitary elderly living and “older-old caregiving” scenarios—the use of innovative smart technologies to support the quality of life and autonomy of the elderly has emerged as a critical issue. At the same time, the concept of “Aging in Place” is gaining traction, as more older adults wish to maintain autonomy and dignity within their familiar communities and homes, thereby reducing reliance on institutional care. This study focuses on the application of smart technologies in the home lives of older adults and their acceptance of such technologies. It investigates the potential of these technologies in addressing the challenges of solitary living and insufficient family caregiving resources, with particular emphasis on their effects on independent living ability, quality of life, and mental well-being. The research framework is based on an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), incorporating not only perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioral intention, but also the construct of emotional satisfaction to better reflect the psychological and emotional needs of the elderly. A quantitative survey was conducted to empirically examine the relationship between older adults’ acceptance of smart care technologies and the outcomes in their daily lives. The findings enhance existing theoretical models and provide concrete recommendations and empirical evidence for government long-term care policies, technology product design, and the aging service industry, facilitating the effective integration of smart technologies with the actual needs of older adults. In conclusion, this study seeks to promote the implementation of smart technologies in elderly care through empirical data, aiming to create a more friendly, safe, and dignified home environment for older adults, and ultimately realize the vision of aging in place.
