Abstract

With the development of the Internet as well as the mobile devices, digital reading has become more and more popular. To understand the impact of e-books to rural patrons, this study aims to explore e-book reading behaviors of the " eReading @ your library Program " participants, including the impact of e-book to them, as well as their queries and demands towards e-books. The study takes a qualitative approach by applying observation and semistructured interview to collect and analysis data. 13 patrons have been invited to participate the study. Both observation as well as interview data are coded. The results are as followed: (1) The patrons’ e-book reading behaviors are passive: (a) The patrons’ e-book extrinsic reading motivations are stronger than their intrinsic motivations. The patrons' main extrinsic motivations are promoted by library promotions and easy access; the major intrinsic motivation is the patrons’ reading needs; (b) For the patrons, the most interesting types of e-books are literature and lifestyle; (c) The patrons use different search methods according to their situation and needs, their reading choices are based on basic information such as title or preview contents; (d) The patrons mostly use tablets to read e-books provided by National Library of Public Information, the most common reading place is the patrons’ own home; the patrons’ reading behaviors differ according to different types of books, the e-book functions mostly used are zoom and bookmark. (2) E-books have influenced the patrons' cognition and reading habits: (a) The patrons' cognition of e-books are related to their reading experiences; (b) While the patrons love the convenience of e-book but still relatively prefer reading paper books; (c) The patrons' following reading habits had been changed after e-reading: ways of finding books, reading types, the proportion of reading time, note-taking methods, repeated reading frequency and shared reading behaviors. (3) The patrons' biggest problem and demand with e-book is searching: (a) the problems the patrons encountered while reading include installation, searching and problems with reading; problems related to search is the most common among the above. (b) The patrons’ demands for content of the e-book include more collections and recommendation lists; the demands for reading software include enhanced search functions and personalized services. Based on the above results, the study provides some suggestions to rural public libraries to strengthen the promotions towards e-books and the information literacy of librarians and patrons. Suggestions on how to improve the e-book service platform of National Library of Public Information and the future research issues are also provided in hope to be beneficial to the practices of e-book promotion for rural public libraries and relating research fields.
