Abstract

The purpose of this study is to deal with and explore the current situation of the outstanding aboriginal taekwondo athletes of our country and how to effectively boost the martial levels and competitiveness of these athletes so as to find and nurture more and more aboriginal taekwondo athletes. The subjects of this research were ten athletes and their coaches that took part in the taekwondo tournament of the 2013 national aboriginal athletic meeting. Through semi-structured interviews and participant observation, four strategic models have been found after the analysis of the inner strengths and weaknesses and outer opportunities and threats in the course of these athletes' learning taekwondo. These strategic models not only offer suggestions and encouragement to the athletes and coaches but are also helpful to the planning and practice of the policy made by the authorities concerned. The SWOT analysis has resulted in understanding that the strengths of these athletes are their better physical qualities etc., their weaknesses are the insufficient adjustment of their attitudes etc., their opportunities are the subsidization they can get, the award system, etc., and the threats to them are poorer family finances, rural-urban disparity, etc. This study also explores the sports career of aboriginal athletes and their current situation and prospect, and according to their own training experiences and the trends of social policy, advances suggestions to the athletes and coaches on the directions of their following training and on how to help athletes make good use of resources and how to seize the opportunities of planning and developing their sports career. Last but not least, this study also makes suggestions on how the governments can provide good policy-making system effectively and how the authorities concerned can help improve some of the present drawbacks in our development of Taekwondo.
