Abstract
Recently, not only public sectors but also private units devote to promote the young to engage international service. Within the main purpose of international service, including the travel factors, it's also called volunteer tourism which lead the young to experience the cultural exchange and service activities, and to meet life-challenge and self-discovery abroad. In past studies, researchers concern about the issues of volunteers' learning and growing, effectiveness of the services and operation of the organization. In the volunteer tourism area, there are only few works discussing what sort of information volunteers need to solve their problems or reduce the anxiety during whole period. This study attempts to reveal information need cognition and motivation intent of volunteer and bring to light what kind of correlation between information needs and motivations. This study focuses on the volunteers who completed services from 2012 to 2015 and adopts quantitative approach to collect data via Internet questionnaire. To avoid over non-volunteer initiative cognition of information, the volunteers who join volunteer tourism by private units and most volunteers in that service groups come from same country, do not match this research requirement. The findings of this thesis are as follows: (1) There are six motivations of volunteers, which are travel, relatives and friends, altruism, project, career growth, and extrinsic prove. (2) The main reason of participating volunteer tourism is project motivation. The second and third motivations are altruism and travel respectively. (3) Multi-motivation combinations of volunteers are found. Combination 1 "career growth and extrinsic prove" and combination 2 "travel and extrinsic prove" are highly relevant respectively. (4) There aresix subjects of cognition of information needs, which are services related planning, personal trip preparing, service content, exploration and sharing, basic information of country , and tourist attractions and others. (5) The subject which volunteers mainly perceived is basic country information. The second and third subjects are personal trip preparing and service content respectively. (6) The subjects "basic country information" and "exploration and sharing" are highly relevant with other subjects and the service content is quite independent. (7) There are three canonical correlations between motivations and subjects of information needs. (8) Significant difference is found in volunteers' motivations among subjects of information needs by seven demographic variables. Based on the results, this study proposes the following suggestions for volunteer recruitment units and volunteers. According to the six subjects of information need found in this study, volunteers could explore information for preparing trip and recruitment units could organize their information by relevance. Further, with the relevance of motivations and subjects of information need, the recruitment units could arrange courses and training or give information which volunteers’ desire or lack. Units should put in mind on strengthening the project features and segmentation, and volunteers should carefully pick up the project which is suit for them.
