Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the self-presentation experience of young people of aged 18 to 25 on social network sites(Instagram and Dcard)through outfit sharing, and its impact on their self-identity and appearance management. Three questions were used to conduct research and discussion: (1)What is the significance of presenting one's own outfit photos online to young people; (2)What is the self-presentation of one's own outfit photos online to impact young people's self-identity (3)What is the relationship between online outfit display and offline appearance management. This study adopted an in-depth interview method and grounded theory analysis of research data. The research results show that (1)Social network sites serve as another social interaction space for young people. This space not only allows them to access a large amount of appearance information and inspiration but also provides opportunities for youngpeople to make friends with fashion enthusiasts, and engage in discussions on topics related to appearance. Today's young people have more abundant media and resources to learn about fashion styles compared to the past. (2)High levels of interest in dress are essential for young people in initiating online fashion sharing. The resulting online social interactions from these shares have a positive impact on participants' self-perception and emotions, encouraging them to sustain their engagement in posting personal fashion photos online. (3)Compared to offline contexts, online self-presentation allows for more time for careful preparation and even photos editing or deletion. This heightened sense of self-control enables participants to experiment more freely with self-expression. Successful experiences in publicly self-presentation online also contribute to participants' confidence in extending these appearance management strategies to offline settings. (4)To achieve their goals, young people must strategize how to present their outfits, considering the symbols in the photos, finding appropriate platforms to share outfit photos, reflecting on their online self-presentation experiences, reviewing past self-presentations online, and engaging in interactive activities on social network sites. Through these processes, they clarify their prefered style and gradually integrate their self-identity. In essence, the intertwined experiences of online outfit display and offline appearance management influence young people's self-identity and their journey of exploring style throughout life.
