Abstract
Football is often referred to as the"sport of the world." Whether in Europe, South America, or globally, people are passionate about football. However, football is not considered a mainstream sport in Taiwan and has even been ridiculed as a "football desert." Since its establishment in 2017, the Taiwan Football Premier League has faced numerous challenges and areas for improvement. This study aims to achieve the following objectives: 1) Understand the league's development history and current situation; 2) Identify the game systemand issues of the first-level football league in Taiwan; and 3) Discuss the development dilemma faced by the league, providing insights into the current situation and problems as a reference for future development and proposing future directions. This study utilizes literature analysis and semi-structured interviews to examine the development and challenges of Taiwanese corporate football leagues. The findings reveal four shortcomings in competition planning: (1) Unstable scheduling; (2) Insufficient number of matches; (3) Inadequate timing of matches; and (4) Substandard venues. Additionally, five major difficulties are identified in terms of development: (1) Lack of corporate support; (2) Unclear direction of the association; (3) Insufficient audience and marketing efforts; (4) Lack of suitable venues; and (5) Dual identities of players.Based on the above findings, the following suggestions are proposed: (1) The government should construct venues and formulate a long-term and effective football development plan; (2) The association should improve game planning and establish a clear development direction; (3) Establish an independent competition to enhance fundraising and promotional effectiveness; and (4) Teams should establish a long-term business model and a clear organizational structure. It is hoped that these recommendations will guide the Taiwan Football Premier League towards positive development, contributing to the progress of football in Taiwan.
