Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the cooperative learning method intervention on motivation to learning, class atmosphere and academic achievement among sixth grade students of an elementary school at arts and humanities area. Six classes, which consist of 178 sixth grade students of an elementary school in Taipei, randomly assigned to the treatment group and the control group. The treatment group received the method of cooperative learning and the control group did the existing teaching method. All subjects took the pretest and the posttest with Learning Condition Questionnaire and Academic Achievement Test at Arts and Humanities area. One-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test three hypothesis. The findings in this study were as follows: 1. The cooperative learning group had a stronger motivation to learning than did the control group at arts and humanities area. 2. The cooperative learning group gained more in class atmosphere than did the control group at arts and humanities area. 3. The cooperative learning group had higher academic achieve- ment than did the control group at arts and humanities area. The results and application of the cooperative learning method were discussed, and suggestions for future research were proposed at the final.
