Abstract
Riad Sattouf, a Franco-Syrian graphic novelist, is known for his award-winning work L’Arabe du Futur. The work depicts the memories of the author's childhood in Libya, Syria, and France. After Persepolis which was published in 2000, it became the best-selling autobiographical graphic novel with the Middle East background. This study aims to explore how L’Arabe du Futur present history and the author’s identity by words and images as a graphic novel. Firstly, this paper sorts out the relationship between France and the Arab World by the author’s identity and the publishing and narrative background of the work. Secondly, the combination of graphic narrative and life writing and its development is discussed. Finally, the paper analyzes how L’Arabe du Futur construct the worlds of different cultures and nationalities through the mix of images and words to carry out Sattouf’s life-writing. From content to form, we see the role and significance of L’Arabe du Futur as a best-selling autobiographical graphic novel in France.
