Abstract
The purposes of this study were to investigate the current status and needs of assistive technology for university students with visual impairments, and to understand if the related services of assistive technology met the needs of visually impaired students. Researchers used a self-designed questionnaire "the current status and needs of assistive technology for university students with visual impairments " as a research tool to collect data. There were 140 visually impaired students who currently attending university were interviewed. The results indicated that there were 556 assistive devices used by 140 college students with visual impairments. Among those devices, the devices using for learning (348 of 556) which includes all kinds of computers for visually-impaired (37.4%), recording equipment like book readers (14.1%) and video magnifiers (12.1%) are the most popular. The devices using for entertainment like canes (61.7%) are the second. The devices using for learning Braille and assisting for living independence are followed. Chi-squared test was used to determine a significant difference between eyesight condition and the usage of devices like computers, magnifiers or canes. The severer the eyesight condition, the usage of above devices is more often. Investigation into the needs of assistive technology for university students with visual impairments, according to the 140 respondents using a total of 556 devices, the most of the respondents rated those devices ‘highly meet’ or ‘meet’ their needs. For the total 40 Braille devices, 87.5% of users indicated those devices ‘highly meet’ or ‘meet’ their needs. For the total 344 learning devices, 93.0% of users indicated those devices ‘highly meet’ or ‘meet’ their needs. For the total 132 recreation aids devices,96.2% of users are indicated those devices ‘highly meet’ or ‘meet’ their needs. For the total 35 daily living devices, 97.2% of users are completely satisfied or satisfied with the indicated those devices ‘highly meet’ or ‘meet’ their needs. In the current situation of related assistive technology services, according to the feedback of 140 respondents, there were 94.3%, 77.1%, 79.3% and 90.0% of users who were ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with aids assessment and provision service, repair and maintenance service, assistive technology training and consulting services, respectively. Finally, according to the findings we provided some suggestions to the college resource center for the visually impaired aids, related software and hardware designing organization, institutions for visual impairments and related units of government.
